Welcome to the Admiral Semmes Chapter

United Daughters of the Confederacy

Auburn, Alabama

Remembering those who served and serve us today

The national United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) was organized on *September 10, 1894, by the uniting of many small groups of ladies organizationsw
hich existed to provide care to the Confederate Veterans and their families. The UDC has not changed much since the day it first began; with core objectives still
maintaining historical preservation, benevolence, education, memorialism, and patriotism. The UDC answers the call of duty, not only to honor American Veterans,
but to serve our current service men and women who put their lives on the line for our freedom everyday.

The Admiral Semmes Chapter was established in 1898 and named for Raphael Semmes (September 27, 1809 – August 30, 1877) who was an officer in the United States Navy from 1826 to 1860 and the Confederate States Navy from 1860 to 1865. During the American Civil War he was captain of the famous commerce raider CSS Alabama, taking a record sixty-nine prizes. Late in the war he was promoted to admiral and also served briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army.

CAMP WATTS MARKER .
Markers Placed by Admiral Semmes Chapter in Randolph County, Alabama
2007

Camp Watts
Named for Thomas H. Watts
CSA Attorney General (1862-63) and Alabama Governor (1863-65)

The camp on this site served as a military hospital, a camp of conscription and instruction, a supply depot, and a cemetery during the War Between the States. At one time, there were hundreds of headstones and rocks marking the final resting place of soldiers who were buried here. The Camp Watts conscription camp was ordered closed after the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. The hospital remained open, staffed by volunteers under the guidance of Juliet Opie Hopkins who relied on charitable donations from Ladies Aid Societies throughout Alabama. She also used her personal funds to keep the hospital operating.
